Le Coq et le Castor was a cozy bar nestled on the outskirts of the main trading district. The scent of rich, malty brews filled the air, mingling with the murmur of various patrons engaged in animated conversations. At a booth by the window, two men clad in heavy winter wear were laughing over pints of beer. They looked up as Spacedawg and Ed approached.
Douglas, the more outspoken of the Fraser brothers, squinted up at them, a half-smile playing on his lips. “What brings the RCSC’s finest to our humble establishment?” he inquired, his tone a mix of curiosity and wariness.
Robert, his eyes widening in recognition, pointed at Spacedawg. “Hey, aren’t you Spacedawg PaulyBirth Name: PaulyCurrent Alias: Spacedawg PaulySpecies: Human-Canine HybridDate of Birth: February 22, 1973Place of Birth: Washington, D.C., United States, Earth, Sol SystemOccupations: Former Chef, Brewer, Distiller, Garden Worker, Apprentice Cobbler; Current First Mate on the Mandoleer's Folly, Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Space Cavalry (RCSC) Overview Spacedawg Pauly is a unique entity whose life story spans both Earth and the...? From those Weedmonger ads—and the action figures!” he exclaimed, enthusiasm overtaking his initial surprise.
Spacedawg nodded, a grin spreading across his face. “Guilty as charged. Seems my reputation precedes me.” He slid into the booth opposite the brothers, with Ed following suit. “We’ll have two of whatever they’re having,” he told the server, nodding toward the brothers’ beers.
“Hamlet Brewing Company’s lager, coming right up,” the server replied, disappearing towards the bar.
With drinks ordered, Spacedawg leaned forward, his expression turning serious. “We’re looking into your former manager, Gordon Sinclair. Heard he left quite suddenly. What can you tell us about him?”
Douglas exchanged a look with Robert before responding. “Ah, Sinclair… He was a real hoser, eh? Disappeared without a word, left us all hanging. Last we heard, he’d been blowing through his paychecks at the Casino de Charlevoix over in the La Malbaie System.”
Robert nodded in agreement. “Yeah, he had a gambling problem. Always chasing his losses. Never thought he’d run off like that, though. And there was that kerfuffle when I overheard him talking about skimming from shipments. Brought it up to management, and next thing we know, we’re fired for making things up. Sinclair had a lot of friends up top.”
Spacedawg’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. “Thanks for the info. Sounds like the casino might be our next stop.” He paused, then asked, “What’s next for you two?”
Douglas grinned, raising his glass. “We just landed jobs at the Hamlet Brewing Company. Starting as official beer tasters and quality control. Guess every cloud has a silver lining, eh?”
Spacedawg raised his own glass in response, a smile tugging at his lips. “To new beginnings, then. And thanks for your help.”
As they finished their beers and left the bar, the pieces of the puzzle were slowly beginning to fit together. The trail was leading them deeper into the Canadian Expanse, and every clue brought them closer to uncovering the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of Gordon Sinclair—and perhaps much more.
