Ed turned to Spacedawg, who was standing beside him. “This is quite the gathering of influential people.”
Spacedawg grinned. “Just wait until you hear the reason behind it.”
At dinner, Ed found himself seated next to Spacedawg. As they began their meal, Ed couldn’t help but comment, “I recognize many of these company executives. What’s the occasion?”
Princess Dagbjort, sitting across from them, answered, “Spacedawg was tasked with organizing trade relations with Henry Weedmonger. But he went the extra mile to solidify other business agreements. My father, the Canis Emperor, is very happy and impressed with his efforts.”
Spacedawg, ever modest, added, “I had a lot of help from Henry Weedmonger. He’s been invaluable.”
Ed nodded knowingly. “You’ve always been modest, Spacedawg. It’s one of your greatest qualities, though sometimes it can be a weakness.”
As the evening progressed, Ed noticed Princess Dagbjort’s slightly enlarged belly. Leaning over, he whispered to Spacedawg, “Are you and the Princess expecting a child?”
Spacedawg’s face lit up with a wide grin. “Twins, actually.”
“Congratulations! That’s wonderful news,” Ed exclaimed quietly, not wanting to interrupt the dinner conversations around them.
After dessert, Ed and Spacedawg stepped out onto the balcony. The night sky above Ottawa Prime was clear, dotted with distant stars. Spacedawg lit up a spliff, taking a deep drag. “I hate big gatherings like this,” he confessed. “I much prefer smaller engagements. I miss being on the ship.”
Ed chuckled. “If you ever need an armed transport somewhere, I’d be happy to help out.”
“Careful, Ed. I might just take you up on that offer,” Spacedawg replied with a smirk.
Turning serious, Ed said, “We’re deep into an investigation. Any chance you could help?”
Spacedawg nodded. “Of course. What do you need?”
“We’ve been tracking suspicious financial transactions. They all lead back to the Bank of the Canadian Expanse. Do you have any contacts there?”
Spacedawg’s eyes lit up. “I know a few people on the board. I’ll talk to them about the account the payments came from. I’ll do it first thing in the morning.”
Ed felt a wave of relief. “Thank you, Spacedawg. That would be a huge help.”
“Anything for an old friend. By the way, you and your officers are welcome to spend the night here.”
While the other senior officers returned to the Mandoleer’s Folly, Ed decided to stay the night. As he settled into his guest quarters, he reflected on the evening’s events and the promising assistance from Spacedawg. The path ahead in their investigation was still fraught with challenges, but with allies like Spacedawg, Ed felt a renewed sense of determination.
