The forest was eerily silent as Spacedawg crept through the underbrush, his heightened senses on high alert. The familiar scent of pine mixed with the fear and sweat of the hidden children filled his nostrils, leading him to a hollowed-out log. His ears picked up the faint but rapid heartbeats of two young boys concealed within.
“Psst…” Spacedawg whispered audibly, trying to sound reassuring. “It’s me, Spacedawg. It’s safe to come out now.”
As the children cautiously peered out, relief washed over their faces. However, before they could emerge fully, the rustling of approaching footsteps put Spacedawg on edge. He gripped his axe tightly, ready for a confrontation, but to his surprise, it was the troops he had met on the shuttle.
“Heard you might need a little backup,” said the squad’s Sergeant, a smirk playing on his lips.
“I need someone to escort these two to safety. Also…the parents and…” Spacedawg began, his concern evident.
“We got Captain Ed’s message. They’re all safe at the station,” the Sergeant interjected, giving Spacedawg a nod of reassurance.
“There are two more children out there and no telling how many men they have on their side. Keep your eyes peeled and you may want to power up your armor, we’re not losing anyone on my watch,” Spacedawg instructed, his tone firm.
With the next child found quickly and safely, they learned that the youngest brother, Pete, was still at the kidnappers’ campsite. The situation was dire, and every second counted.
The Sergeant, understanding the urgency, handed Spacedawg a blaster. “Just in case.”
“Thanks, Sergeant,” Spacedawg replied, feeling the weight of the weapon in his hand.
As two troopers escorted three of the Devonshire brothers back to safety, Spacedawg and the remaining squad members advanced towards the kidnappers’ camp. They took down a few men on patrol with precision, their movements silent and deadly.

The kidnappers laughed cruelly, taunting him about his family’s fate. But they didn’t realize their trap had failed—their bomb hadn’t detonated, and Spacedawg was already there.
Spacedawg took advantage of the kidnappers’ distraction and snuck up to release Pete’s restraints. “Run and maybe create a little distraction,” he whispered to the boy.
Pete nodded, picked up a stone, and threw it at one of the kidnappers. “Hey Hosers!” he taunted. “Betcha can’t catch me!”
As the men rallied to chase Pete, Spacedawg blocked their path, axe in one hand and the blaster in the other. “You gentlemen lost?” he challenged them.
The kidnappers hesitated, their bravado faltering as they faced the legendary hero. “Get him!” cried their leader, but it was too late.
They didn’t last long against Spacedawg. Two of them ran, but were quickly apprehended by the Sergeant’s squad, and the leader found himself alone and outmatched.
“You’re under arrest,” Spacedawg declared, just as the leader reached for his gun. Quick as a flash, Spacedawg shot the weapon out of his hand, and the Sergeant was there to help secure the prisoner.
“Nicely done, Commander,” said the Sergeant, admiration in his voice.
“And to you and your squad,” Spacedawg returned the compliment. “I couldn’t have done this without you.”
As the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, Spacedawg looked around at the peaceful forest, now safe again for its true inhabitants. The mission was a success, but more importantly, a family was whole once more.
