More neared the Devonshire’s cabin, the stillness of the night was broken by a sinister rustling. He spotted two men, torches in hand, moving stealthily toward the wooden structure. Without a blaster at his side, Spacedawg resorted to his trusted weapon, Fyrs-Ond. With a practiced flick of his wrist, he sent the axe spinning through the air like a deadly boomerang, its blade whistling as it sliced the night.
The axe met its targets with lethal precision, and the men collapsed, their torches tumbling to the damp earth. Spacedawg summoned Fyrs-Ond back to his grasp and quickly stamped out the flickering flames that threatened to ignite the accelerant nearby.
Kicking the cabin door open, Spacedawg’s eyes quickly adjusted to the dim interior, where he found Charles and Angie Devonshire bound to chairs, panic written across their faces. Wasting no time, he slashed through their restraints. As he did, his super hearing picked up a faint yet distinct beeping sound. His instincts screamed ‘bomb.’
“Everyone out, now!” Spacedawg commanded, his voice a sharp bark in the quiet room. Using Fyrs-Ond, he demolished the back wall with a few powerful strokes, creating an escape route. He herded the Devonshires through just as the cabin succumbed to a fiery explosion, debris scattering into the night.
Once they were a safe distance away, Charles Devonshire embraced Spacedawg tightly. “Thank you, Commander Spacedawg. You saved our lives.”
Spacedawg nodded, his expression solemn. “Thank your son Charlie. He got to me in time.” He then handed Charles a flashlight and his canteen. “I need to find your other children. Go to my campsite; it’s a few kilometers from here. Wait there until you’re ready, then use the main path—it’s the first campsite on the left. Ed will be there.”
After ensuring the Devonshires were equipped to make their way to safety, Spacedawg turned back toward the darkness, his silhouette merging with the shadows as he set off to track down the remaining family members.
“Stay safe,” he called over his shoulder, then disappeared into the night, his mind set on rescue and his heart heavy with the weight of the mission ahead.
