Renée nodded. “We thought it might be best to conduct interrogations aboard the Mandoleer’s Folly. We can hold anyone who needs detaining in our brig.”
Pembroke considered this and then smiled. “That sounds like a plan. I don’t trust the local station either.”
Back on the Mandoleer’s Folly, Renée, J.J., and Agent Pembroke headed to the brig. They found a chilling sight: the records officer lay lifeless in his cell. A medical team tried to revive him, but it was too late. A strange ooze was seeping from his mouth and ears.
“What is that?” Pembroke muttered, clearly disturbed.
Renée scanned the body with her handheld device. “Preliminary results indicate a forced aneurysm. It looks like some sort of internal trauma, likely caused by a very low-yield explosive. Just enough to liquefy the brain without causing a mess.”
Pembroke grumbled in frustration. “This complicates things.”
The medical team cleared the area, allowing crime scene investigators to document the scene thoroughly. Renée, J.J., and Agent Pembroke regrouped in a nearby conference room.
“We’re dealing with professionals,” J.J. said, breaking the silence. “Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing.”
Renée nodded, looking serious. “The records officer’s death means we’re getting close to something big. The information we’ve gathered so far shows widespread corruption and criminal activity.”
Agent Pembroke leaned forward, determined. “We need to keep pushing forward. Let’s review what we have and figure out our next steps. This is far from over.”
