Chapter 2: The Stranded Colony

Stories, The Mandoleer's Folly Series

The Mandoleer’s Folly drifted into orbit around the rogue planet. The ship’s sensors displayed the barren, desolate surface of the planet, punctuated only by the faint glimmers of the colony domes.

The atmosphere is thin but breathable inside the domes. No immediate threats detected.”

Renée LachapelleInspector Renée Lachapelle is a distinguished officer who currently heads the joint anti-crime task force between the local Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Space Cavalry (RCSC) on Montreal Prime. Renowned for her sharp investigative skills and unwavering commitment, Lachapelle plays a pivotal role in maintaining law and order in the Quebec Sector of the Canadian Expanse.  Early Life and Background... More joined them. “We need to be prepared for anything. These people have been stranded for a long time. They might not be in the best shape.”

Spacedawg nodded. “Let’s get moving. We’ll split into two teams. Ed, you secure the landing area with your team. The shuttles descended smoothly onto the planet’s surface, kicking up clouds of dust as they landed. Ed’s team disembarked first, securing the perimeter and setting up a temporary base.

Renée led the second team towards the main dome. As they approached, they saw signs of wear and tear—cracked panels, makeshift repairs, and a sense of neglect.

“Looks like they’ve been struggling,” J.J. SmithJohn Jacob Smith is a seasoned police officer from Georgetown, known for his bravery and unique involvement in managing time anomalies. Inside the dome, they were met with a small group of survivors. Dr. Ava Reid, the colony leader, stepped forward. Her face was lined with exhaustion, but her eyes held a spark of determination.

“Thank you for coming,” Dr. Reid said. “We’ve been waiting a long time for help.”

Spacedawg introduced his team, then asked, “What happened here, Dr. Reid?”

Dr. Reid sighed, “It was a terraforming accident. A miscalculation sent us drifting out of orbit. We’ve been making do, but supplies are running low and the equipment is failing.”

“We’ll do our best to make repairs,” the Alchemist added, already working on a broken panel.

More coordinated with the colony’s engineers. “We need to get the critical systems back online first,” he directed. “Water, power, and food production.”

Meanwhile, Spacedawg and Renée met with Dr. Reid and her team to discuss the evacuation. “We need to prioritize the injured and children,” Renée said, reviewing the list of evacuees.

Dr. Reid nodded. “There are some here who might resist leaving. They’ve grown attached to this place, despite everything.”

“Leave that to us,” Spacedawg assured her.

Suddenly, alarms blared through the dome. “What now?” Renée muttered, reaching for her blaster.

A group of colonists, led by a man named Marcus, blocked their path. “We’re not leaving,” Marcus declared. “This is our home.”

Renée stepped forward, her voice firm. “We’re here to help. Staying means certain death. We need to evacuate.”

Marcus glared but didn’t move. “We’re not going without a fight.”

Spacedawg intervened. “Listen to reason, Marcus. We can’t force you to come, but think about the others—the children, the injured. They need to leave.”

Marcus hesitated, then backed down. “Fine. But we’re staying.”

Renée signaled to her team. “Secure the area. We’ll get the others out first.”

The evacuation proceeded smoothly after that. The injured were carefully transported to the shuttles, followed by the children and other priority evacuees.

Spacedawg and his team made final checks before departure. “Is everyone accounted for?” he asked.

Dr. Reid confirmed. “All evacuees are on board. Thank you, Captain.”

As the Mandoleer’s Folly lifted off, the crew reflected on the mission. “We did good today,” J.J. said, looking out at the drifting planet below.

Renée nodded. “But the real work starts now. We need to make sure these people get the care they need.”

Spacedawg agreed. “One step at a time. Let’s get them home first.”

As the ship set course back to the Order 93 base, a sense of accomplishment mixed with a somber awareness of the challenges ahead filled the air. They had saved the colony, but the journey was far from over.
