“Relax, Pierce. We’ve got the place surrounded,” Ed assured him, hoping to calm the agitated man.
Pierce seemed to relax slightly, handing Ed a small data chip. “This has everything. Police reports, surveillance, ledgers, contacts… everything.”
Before Ed could respond, a blaster shot rang out. Pierce’s eyes widened in shock, and he slumped into Ed’s arms, blood staining Ed’s uniform.
“Medic! We need a medic here!” Ed shouted, trying to perform first aid.
Pierce managed to gasp a few final words. “Dryden Space Dock… Warehouse 2963… that’s where you’ll find…” His voice trailed off as life left his body.
The medical team arrived but it was too late. Meanwhile, the troopers scanned the area for the sniper’s location. They pinpointed the trajectory to a nearby high-rise.
“Let’s move, people. Secure that building,” J.J. SmithJohn Jacob Smith is a seasoned police officer from Georgetown, known for his bravery and unique involvement in managing time anomalies. The troopers scoured every floor of the high-rise until they found the sniper’s nest. An abandoned rifle lay on a soft pad, surrounded by ration packs and bottles filled with urine.
Renée examined the rifle. “This is for amateurs. A guided round sniper rifle—just paint the target with the laser and the round does the rest. These are illegal and rare.”
She scanned the bottles and found a match. “Laura Duffy. She’s wanted for breaking and entering, assault, and grand theft spacecraft.”
J.J. nodded. “Is she still in the system?”
Renée checked her scanner. “She’s tagged with a tracker buried in her thigh. She’s in a low-rise apartment about half a kilometer away.”
“Let’s move,” J.J. ordered. “Surround the building. Non-lethal rounds only.”
The troopers burst into the apartment, finding a group of squatters using illegal substances. They located Laura Duffy in the back, dead from an apparent overdose.
Renée sighed, checking her communicator. “I’ll inform the local RCSC station. They need to know about this.”
Laura’s body was taken back to the Mandoleer’s Folly for examination. Ed flew back with the body, deep in thought about the mission.
In the medical bay, Renée and J.J. examined Laura’s body. Bruises on her wrists, a compound fracture, and a pronounced injection site indicated foul play.
“I don’t think this was an accidental overdose,” Renée said. “She was likely held down and injected.”
J.J. frowned. “Do we have any leads?”
Renée nodded. “She had a cruise liner ticket to Vancouver Prime, 300,000 looniesThe official currency of the Canadian Expanse Abbreviation: CEL Unit: Loon, Loonies Symbol: $ Banknotes: Commemorative banknotes in $5,10, 20, 50 and 100 denominations. Ed joined them, his expression grim. “We’ll check out Warehouse 2963 first. Let’s get to the bottom of this.”
The crew prepared for their next move, determined to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy they were unraveling.
