Cardinal Rules and Breaking Them

Blog Post, From the Author

As a storyteller, I’ve got a few cardinal rules that I often find myself bending—because let’s face it, rules in creative work are more like guidelines, right? Today, I want to pull back the curtain on something I like to call “submission packets.” It’s not just about telling a story; it’s about creating an entire world that readers can dive into, piece by piece.

So, what’s in a submission packet? Well, it’s pretty immersive:

1. The Story: This one’s a given. It’s the heart of the packet, the main event.

2. Character Profiles: Every major player in the story gets a profile. Introduced someone new? They need a profile too. These go into a Glossary, which becomes a handy reference not just for me while I write, but also for you, the reader.

3. The Glossary: This isn’t your average glossary. It’s chock-full of terms, locations, character backstories, and more. It’s the encyclopedia of the story’s universe.

4. Supporting Documents: Here’s where it gets even more fun. This section includes items like news articles related to the story’s events, books or excerpts mentioned within the tale, documentaries or animations that inspired or are inspired by the story, and artwork that brings the text to life. Each piece adds layers of depth and realism to the narrative.

The idea is that every article, every term in the story is interactive. Curious about a character? Just click on their name highlighted in the text, and you’ll be whisked away to their full profile. Want to know more about a location? A click brings up its history and significance.

I admit, I’ve broken these rules before—sometimes you get so caught up in the story that some details just sprint ahead of you. But hey, I’m making up for it, and this approach really transforms reading into a more dynamic and interactive experience.

I hope this peek into my process enriches your experience of the stories and perhaps even inspires your own creative projects. Because if there’s one rule that should never be broken, it’s that stories are meant to be lived, not just read.

Until next time, dive deep and enjoy the journey!
